THE END OF R-22 & THE EMERGENCE OF R-410A:
In the near future, 2010 to be exact, R-22 will be phased out and will no longer be produced on a global scale. Currently, the majority of air conditioners and heat pumps use R-22 refrigerant. After 2010, the supplies of R-22 refrigerant will grow scarce… and very expensive as the manufacturers of refrigerant convert to manufacturing the new refrigerant, R-410A.
- Question: What does this mean to me?
- Answer: Should you have a refrigerant leak in your air conditioner/heat pump, you could face the possibility of an expensive repair, or no repair at all depending on supplies of R-22.
- Question: Why was this change made?
- Answer: R-22 refrigerant is known as an “ozone depleting” refrigerant. When R-22 leaks, or is not disposed of properly, it damages our ozone layer. R-410A is a new blend of refrigerant that is safer for the environment and actually performs more efficiently than R-22.
- Question: How long after 2010 can I expect to be able to get R-22?
- Answer: It’s impossible to tell how long supplies of R-22 will last, but we do know that by 2015, the cap on R-22 refrigerant production will be reduced to allow a maximum of about 60 million pounds of new R-22 to be produced in or imported into the U.S. Currently, the U.S. uses over 160 million pounds each year.

INDOOR AIR QUALITY:
These days, major emphasis has been placed on Indoor Air Quality and its potential detriments to your health. People are becoming more aware of the indoor air pollution problem that exists and are now able to do something about it. Products ranging from whole house filtration systems to UV Lights are now available at reasonable prices to homeowners, and can vastly improve Indoor Air Quality.
If you’re an asthma or allergy sufferer, simply changing your filters every month isn’t enough. There are products on the market that can filter the whole house, not just particular rooms, using state of the art electronic air filtration. These products are guaranteed to trap 99.97% of dust and pollen spores.
If you’re susceptible to colds, installing UV Lighting can greatly improve your health and lower your risk of catching a cold. UV Lighting doesn’t filter the air, but it does sterilize the air, killing viruses and bacteria that can cause colds. UV Lights usually last a year or two then the bulb simply needs to be replaced. It is a simple and inexpensive way to sterilize the air in your home.
